  Tan·a·ger n.  Zool. Any one of numerous species of bright-colored singing birds belonging to Tanagra, Piranga, and allied genera.  The scarlet tanager (Piranga erythromelas) and the summer redbird (Piranga rubra) are common species of the United States.
