 Li·ber n.  Bot. The inner bark of plants, lying next to the wood. It usually contains a large proportion of woody, fibrous cells, and is, therefore, the part from which the fiber of the plant is obtained, as that of hemp, etc.
 Liber cells, elongated woody cells found in the liber.

 1. Bot. Vegetable tissue composed of short cells with thickened or hardened walls, as in nutshells and the gritty parts of a pear. See Sclerotic.
 Note:By recent German writers and their English translators, this term is used for liber cells.
 2. Zool. The hard calcareous deposit in the tissues of Anthozoa, constituting the stony corals.
